Alebrijes (Spanish pronunciation: [aleˈβɾixes]) are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures

What: Hampton Arts Education is having an art contest associated with The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center’s El Dia De Los Muertos: Day of the Dead Festival. The festival is a free family-friendly event on Saturday, October 28th from 11AM – 2PM, all are welcome!

Task: Create a 3-dimentional Alebrije using mixed media. Students can use any materials they would like to create these sculptures of mythical creatures. At least one feature of the Alebrije must be 3-dimentional.  

Contest: Sculptures will be divided into the following categories: K-2nd, 3rd – 5th, Middle School, High School, Adult and a 1st, 2nd, 3rd and honorable mention will be awarded in each category. All sculptures will be put on display at The Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center’s El Dia De Los Muertos: Day of the Dead Festival.

Registration: It is free to enter this contest. If entering individually please include artist’s first and last name, a contact number, and a parent/guardian (if applicable). If entering with a school please include artist first and last initial, school, grade level, teacher, and a contact number.

Prize: Each winner in every category will receive a promo code to attend a visual art or performing arts class of their choosing at a discounted rate

Deadline: Sculptures will be collected until Saturday October 21st at 10:00 AM. Sculptures can be dropped of at The American Theatre until the listed deadline. Sculptures can also be dropped off at the Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center until Friday October 20th at 6:00 PM
