Q&A w/ HRP musician Mike Marshall.

The Philharmonic’s mission is to strive for artistic excellence, to increase community awareness and participation in the performing arts. Get to know bassoon player, Mike Marshall, he talks about his time with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic and his hobbies outside of the HRP. 

 

  1. What is your name, age, and main instrument?

Michael Marshall, 62, bassoon (actually saxophone. But I assume you mean in the orchestra). 

  1. What or who made you want to become a musician?

My mother. 

  1. What musical accomplishments do you see yourself achieving in the next 5-10 years?

Remaining active in the local performance area.

  1. Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?

Golf and my grandkids 

  1. What is the best thing about performing with the Hampton Roads Philharmonic?

Performing iconic repertoire with quality musicians.

  1. What do you like most about playing music? What do you not like about it?

It speaks to my soul.  

  1. Are there any musicians who inspire you? If so, what qualities do you admire most about them?

The young artists that we (HRP) feature every year. 

  1. How many years have you been performing with HRP and why are community orchestras important?

2014; 2018-2024 (8). Performing arts is critical to a community's health. Both for the performers and the patrons.
