Rock out with Buddy Holly

Get your dancing shoes ready! An Evening with Buddy Holly featuring Robbie Limon is headed to The American Theatre on Saturday, April 9 at 8:00pm!

Born Charles Hardin Holley, Buddy Holly grew up in Lubbock, Texas where he aspired to Buddy Holly.jpgbecome a professional musician. His family had a strong connection to music; so it was in his nature to play instruments such as the guitar, banjo, and mandolin. Young Holly admired the sound of rock and roll and saw his future in the music industry. It was not long before he jumped into the business with both feet and appeared as the opening act for the great Elvis Presley. Success came quick for Holly; he began his career in 1955 and cut his first official recording session in January of 1956 in Nashville for Decca Records.

During the 1950’s, artists writing their own songs happened on a rare occasion. Buddy Holly & the Crickets changed that in a serious way by hitting number one with a song that they had written, and reaching the Top Ten with originals like "Oh, Boy" and "Peggy Sue".. The group worked out a sound that gave shape to the next wave of rock & roll and, especially, to early British rock & roll and the subsequent British Invasion beat, with the lead and rhythm guitars closely interlocked to create a fuller, harder sound.

It is safe to say that Holly’s successful career, lasting from the spring of 1957 until the winter of 1959, made him the single most influential creative force in early rock & roll.
