Squirrel Nut Zippers Q&A with Jimbo Mathis

1. Which song was the most challenging to write or record and why?

You know, I don’t really struggle too much with writing.  Songs usually just hit me all at once, and when they do that. It’s just a matter of getting the right people around a few microphones and lettin 'er rip.

2. Can you share a memorable or funny story from your recent performance?

We get to perform at a lot of old theaters and opera houses, which is always really a thrill, but most recently we performed at Levon Helms Barn in Woodstock NY.  That was a real honor.

3. How do you guys unwind after a show?

Honestly, it’s different for each of us, but being on the road as long as I have (40 years) I look forward to getting to the motel and catching some Z’s. We frequently have to drive an hour or so after performances so we’ll just carry on amongst ourselves in the bus or van.

4. What is one thing you want your fans to know about the band?

After a 10-year hiatus, I reanimated the band in 2016, and we’ve been touring ever since. We’ve also released 2 albums in that time, “Beasts of Burgundy” and “Lost Songs of Doc Souchon”.

5. Who came up with the band name?

I was familiar with the Squirrel Nut Zippers candy from my days working construction at RALIEGH/Durham Airport. A little country store sold them out that way and the name seemed apropos for the group….

6. How do you guys prepare for a tour? Are there any pre-concert rituals you all do to help you get ready for the show?

Preparations mainly involve the logistics of the actual travel. We frequently rehearse and try to add new spice to the shows. Pre-show rituals usually involve monkey masks and crystal balls.
